Unit 6 Terms

People and Resources

Natural Resource Anything from nature that people can use.
Nonrenewable Resource A resource that, once used, cannot be replaced in a reasonable amount of time.
Renewable Resource A resource that can be replaced within a reasonable amount of time.
Fossil Fuel Fuel formed from the remains of once-living things. Coal, oil, and natural gas are fossil fuels.
Conservation The use of less of something to make its supply last longer.
Soil A mixture of water, air, tine pieces of rock, and humus.
Pollution Any harmful substance in the environment.
Humus The remains of decayed plants or animals in the soil
Sand The largest particles of rock that make up soil.
Clay The smallest particles of rock that make up soil.
Silt Particles of rock that are smaller than sand but larger than clay.
Nutrients Substances in soil that plants need to grow and stay healthy.
