Definitions from Chapter 04

TermDefinition
categorization a precondition for stereotype activation: based on a person's observable characteristics, an observer must classify that person as a member of a stereotyped group
individuating information information that is specific to a person, regardless of whether it is stereotypic to the person's group
prototypicality the extent to which a person fits the observer's concept of the essential features characteristic of that category
shifting standards model (in terms of activated stereotypes) if some groups are seen as less competent as others, limited resources will be allocated to the "competent" group, while unlimited resources will be allocated to the "incompetent" group, because the standard they are expected to meet is lower
stereotype activation the extent to which a stereotype is accessible in one's mind; a dormant stereotype coming into use
stereotype application the extent to which one uses a stereotype to judge a member of the stereotypical group
stereotype endorsement the extent to which a person actually agrees with the social stereotype of a group
automatic processing stereotype activation triggered by observing stimuli associated with the stereotypical group
motivated processing stereotype activation that arises when the stereotype can fulfill goals or needs
racial phenotypical bias the more prototypical a person is of a category, the more quickly and easily the person is categorized.
ingroup overexclusion the phenomenon in which ingroup members are more likely to be misclassified as outgroup members by prejudiced people to prevent the risk of any outgroup member being treated as an ingroup member.
chronic egalitarian goals strongly held long-term beliefs in equality
