What are the main functions of the endocrine system? Communication & control.
What does the endocrine system affect? Causes changes in the metabolic activities of body tissues.
What is the name for the secretion of an endocrine gland that alters the physiological activity of target cells of the body? Hormones.
What is a group of cells that secrete compounds into the extracellular space around the secretory cells rather than into ducts? Endocrine gland.
What are the functions of hormones? Control internal environment by regulating chemical composition & volume; respond to external environment changes; help with growth & development; contribute to basic processes of reproduction.
How are hormonal secretions regulated? Feedback control, usually negative (the more of a hormone in blood, the less will be secreted and vice versa).
What gland is located in the 3rd ventricle of the brain & is influenced by amount of light entering eyes & regulates function of gonads by secreting melatonin? Pineal gland.
What gland is known as the "master gland"? Pituitary gland.
What gland is the "go-between" the nervous & endocrine systems, interpreting nervous input & causing chemical output? Hypothalamus.
What gland has paired lobes just below larynx & anterior to trachea & secretes thyroid hormone & calcitonin? Thyroid.
What glands (4) are located on back of thyroid & secrete parathyroid hormone? Parathyroid glands.
What gland is located in mediastinum, between the lungs, secretes thymosin & directs the development of T-cells? Thymus.
What glands are located on the kidneys? Adrenal glands.
What gland is located posterior & slightly inferior to the stomach & acts as both an exocrine & endocrine gland? Pancreas.
What gland (as part of another gland) produces insulin & glucagon? Island of Langerhans (the pancreas acting as an endocrine gland).
In women, what glands produce estrogen & progesterone? Ovaries.
In men, what glands produce testosterone? Testes.
In both female and male, what is the general term for the glands that produce estrogen, progesterone, & testosterone? Gonads.
What is another term for "tissue hormones"? Prostaglandins.
