Stack #21318
Nervous Sys.-Ques. | Nervous Sys.- Answers |
---|---|
What are the main functions of the nervous system? | Communication & control. |
The nervous system is geographically divided into 2 parts. What are those parts? | Central nervous system (CNS) & Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). |
What body parts make up the CNS? | Brain & spinal cord (the CaptaiNS). |
What body parts make up the PNS? | Cranial & spinal nerves and their branches (the PeoNS). |
What is the term describing the axons (fibers) that bring sensory information to the CNS? | Afferent. |
What is the term describing the axons (fibers) that bring sensory information out of the CNS? | Efferent or motor. |
The efferent (or motor) fibers are functionally divided into what? | Somatic nervous system & the autonomic nervous system. |
What organs/body parts does the somatic nervous system supply information to? | Skeletal muscle. |
What organs/body parts does the autonomic nervous system supply information to? | Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, & glands. |
What are the nerve cells that transmit information? | Neurons. |
What cells nurture & support the neurons? | Neuroglia. |
What part of a neuron receives information from other neurons? | Dendrites. |
What carries the nerve impulse to the terminal ending of the neuron where it communicates with another neuron or a body part/organ? | Axon. |
What is the junction (or gap) between 2 neurons? | Synapse. |
What is another term for the nerve impulses as self-propagating waves of depolarization that travel along the membrane of the neuron? | Action potentials. |
What speeds the conduction time of the action potential and why? | Schwann cells because they surround many of the axons outside the CNS & create a sheath of myelin to insulate the cell membrane. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret pressure? | Mechanoreceptors. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret chemical compounds (taste/smell)? | Chemoreceptors. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret temperature? | Thermoreceptors. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret pain? | Nociceptors. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret light? | Rods & cones. |
What are the receptors endings in the PNS that interpret body & body part positions in space? | Proprioceptors. |
What's the term for stereotyped, predictable responses to stimuli which are integrated at the spinal level (meaning without bringing the brain into it)? | Spinal reflexes (aka knee jerk reaction) |
There are 3 layers of connective tissue (meninges) wrapping the brain and spinal cord. What are they in order from the innermost to outermost layer? | Pia mater, arachnoid mater, & dura mater. |
What part of the brain consists of the medulla, pons, & mid-brain and contains vital centers for cardiac & respiratory rhythms & vasomotor control? | Brainstem. |
What part of the brain includes the thalamus & hypothalamus? | Diencephalon. |
What part of the brain associates emotion with sensation? | Thalamus. |
What part of the brain is a tiny brain unto itself that integrates the nervous & endocrine sys. & controls sleep, rage, aggression, etc.? | Hypothalamus. |
What part of the brain is the highest and newest part allowing thinking, will, decision, seeing, etc.? | Cerebrum. |
What part of the brain allows for smoothly coordinated movements, equilibrium, & posture control? | Cerebellum. |
What division of the autonomic nervous sys. is connected to the thoracic & lumbar regions of the spinal cord and initiates the "fight or flight" reaction? | Sympathetic. |
What division of the autonomic nervous sys. is connected to the cranial & sacral regions of the spinal cord & initiates the "rest & repose" reaction? | Parasympathetic. |
What is the function of the Autonomic nervous system? | To maintain or quickly restore homestasis. |
