WHAT WERE THE MAIN IDEAS OF ENLIGHTENMENT First 3 1) REASON- Philosophers believed you could solve anything through logic & reason 2) NATURE -The philosophers believed everything in nature was good & there for a reason. 3) HAPPINESS- Philosophers encouraged people to find good in life.
WHAT WERE THE MAIN IDEAS OF ENLIGHTENMENT Second 3 4) PROGRESS- philosophers believed that society & people could always improve. 5) LIBERTY-philosophers believed that people had the right to freedom if they wanted it.
Who were the main thinkers of the ENLIGHTENMENT The most influential Enlightenment thinkers were Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Voltaire, Baron de Montesquieu, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. Thomas Hobbes based his theories on government on his belief that man was basically greedy, selfish, and cruel.
WHAT WAS THOMAS HOBBES IDEAL IN THE ENLIGHTENEMNT Believed a King should rule and enter into social contact with the people. If the King failed to meet the needs of the people, the people had the right to remove him from power.
WHAT WAS JOHN LOCKE'S IDEAL IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT Believe people had 3 natural right; 1) LIFE 2) LIBERTY(Freedom) 3) PROPERTY and that Govt. should protect all of these rights.
WHAT WAS VOLTAIRE'S IDEAL IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT Voltaire believed in 1)TOLERANCE 2) FREEDOM OF RELIGION 3) FREE SPEECH
WHAT WAS ROUSSEAU'S IDEAL IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT Rousseau believed in and expanded form of HOBBES ideas of 1) SOCIAL CONTRACT and 2) PEOPLE HAD RIGHT TO CHOOSE THEIR GOVERNEMENT
WHAT WAS MONTESQUIEU'S IDEAL IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT He believed in 1) SEPARATION OF POWERS which were 3 BRANCHES OF GOVT. a) LEGISLATIVE to make laws b) EXECUTIVE to enforce the laws c) COURT to enforce the laws

TYPES OF DEMOCRACY 1) DIRECT DEMOCRACY: from ancient greece/every citizen votes on every matter 2) REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY: from ancient Rome/people vote on representative to make decisions for them/run the country
