What is the application of cold agents for therapeutic purposes called? Cryotherapy
The application of cold is beneficial for what type of areas? Painful, inflamed and swollen
How does the application of cold help Pain, inflammation and swelling? Reduces pain and cause vasoconstriction to limit swelling.
What does contrast therapy do? Increases circulation to area t promote healing by alternating hot and cold.
What is an affect of cold application? Surface blood vessels constrict and blood is driven to the interiour of the body.
Types of applications of cold? Compressor units with thermal packs, vapocoolant sprays, and immersion baths.
How do you make an ice pack? Fill ziplock with 1/3 broken/crushed ice and seal it and apply to area.
Reusable ice packs can? Direct contact is unsanitary and can result in injury form freezing the tissure
Name a modalities of heat? Dry heat: diathermy (microwave)
Heating pad applies what type of heat? Dry
Diathermy and ultrasound therapy require what? Specialized equipment and is beyond a massage therapist.
The application of oscillating electromagnetic fields to the tissue? Diathermy
What do pulsating shower heads do? Combine moist heat and mild compression
What is an immersion bath? Whenever the body or body part is submerged in water.
What is temperature of a Tepid bath? 80-92 degrees
What is the temperature of a saline bath? 90-98 degrees
What are the signs that an individual is having a bad reaction to a cool bath/shower? Chilled, shivering, blue lipped or goose fleshed.
What is the time frame for a cool bath/shower? 3-5 minutes
How long is a saline (salt) bath? 10-20 minutes
What does a warm bath do? Produces relaxation and relieves nervous tension
What supplies are needed for an immersion bath? Tub, thermometer, sheets, compression cloth and basin of cool water.
What parts are submerged during a Sitz bath? The hips and pelvic region of the body.
How long is a cool sitz bath 3-5 minutes
How do you prepare a Sitz bath? Fill basin or tub with 6" of water to immerse buttocks comfortably.
What are benefits of Whirlpool bath? Circulation, soothing the the muscles and relaxing to the nerves
What is a Sauna? Produced by dry heat source.
What is temperature and humidity of a sauna? 180-190, 5-30%
What is exposure time in a Cabinet bathe or steam canopy? 10-25 Min
What is the most effective methods of increasing local circulation? Contrast therapy alternating hot and cold
What is contrast bath? Alternating hot (104) and cold reheat hot water when in cold water do for 40 sec-2 minutes or until client is accustomed to hot water. repeat 3-6 times and always end with cold.
What is a Russian bath? Full body steam bath for the purpose of causing perspiration it is beneficial for cleansing, relaxation adn improved metabolism.
