Biological rhythms Cycles of biological functions
Circadian rhythms The biological cycle of functions that coincide with the 24-hour day
Melatonin (suprachiasmatic nucleus) A sleep-inducing hormone
REM sleep Rapid eye movement sleep, period of sleep in which vivid dreams occur
Alpha waves Slow waves of relaxed awakeness
Beta waves Faster waves of awakeness that occur when engaged in cognitive tasks
Delta waves Large, slow waves of deep sleep
Insomnia Persistent problems in falling or staying asleep
Narcolepsy A disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks causing people to lapse directly into REM sleep
Sleep apnea Temporary cessations of breathing and repeated momentary awakenings
Night terrors Cause high arousal and the appearance of being terrified, occur during Stage 4 sleep
Manifest content According to Freud, the remembered storyline of a dream
Latent content According to Freud, the underlying meaning of a dream
Hypnosis A process in which one person suggests to another that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors will spontaneously occur
Posthypnotic suggestion A suggestion made during a hypnotic session to be carried out after the subject is no longer hypnotized
