Tissues Groups of cells that are similar in structure and function
Contract To shorten
Organs Structures that have a specific function and are made up of different tissues
Organ Systems Groups of organs that have related functions
Respiratory System An organ system that delivers oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide, a waste gas, from the blood. It includes the nostrils, trachea, and lungs
Trachea (windpipe) A tube that carries air to the lungs
Diaphragm A band of muscle that regulates the pressure in the chest cavity
Mucus: Sticky, wet material in your nose and other organs
Circulatory System An organ system that carries nutrients and other chemicals to the cells of the body and carries away waste; includes the heart, arteries and veins
Heart The organ responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels of the body
Nutrients The useable substances in food
Blood Vessels Tube-like parts of the circulatory system that transport blood through the body
Vein A blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart
Artery A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Heart Chamber One of four parts — right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle — of a heart
Atria (singular, atrium) Heart chambers that receive blood from the veins
Ventricles Muscular heart chambers that pump blood through the arteries
Fat A type of substance found in food that gives the body the energy it needs
Calorie The amount of energy in foods. One Calorie is the same as 1 kilocalorie or 1000 calories
calorie The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by 1°C
Vitamin A type of substance found in food that is needed in small amounts. It helps the body in many ways, such as keeping it from developing certain diseases.
Mineral A type of substance found in food that is needed in small amounts. The mineral calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth,and the mineral iron is needed for healthy red blood cells
