What is an element? An element is any substance that cannot be broken down into smaller substances
What is an compound ? A compound is formed when two elements combine chemically
What is the definition of an organic substance? Compounds that contain carbon and are derived from living or formerly living things
What is a carbohydrate? Energy rich organic compound made up of hydrogen(H) , carbon(C), and oxygen(O).
What is Protein? A large organic molecule used for building cell parts
What are some characteristics of an element? -made of only one type of atom -written only with one capital letter -pure substance -cannot be broken down
What are some characteristics of a compound? -made of two or more elements -Written with 2 or more capital letters -formula might contain numbers -smallest part is a molecule
What are some characteristics of an organic substance? -contains carbon (C) -comes from something living or that was once living -it is a fossil fuel or made from fossil fuels
What are some characteristics of carbohydrates? -contains carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) -is a sugar made of sugars -is a starch that can be broken down into smaller units of sugar -high in energy -when you burn a carbohydrate, you are left with carbon (C) and water vapor
What are some characteristics of proteins? -made of carbon(C), hydrogen (H), and nitrogen (N) -found in poultry and meat products
What are lipids? an energy rich, organic substance made of carbon(C), hydrogen (H),oxygen (O)
