Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Irrigation The redirection of water for the purpose of farming.
Neolithic Meaning "New Stone Age". The invention of farming leading humans to settle in permanent communities.
Paleolithic Meaning "Old Stone Age". Humans used stone tools in act of hunting and gathering.
Civiliaztion Complex, highly organized social order build around a highly populated city.
River Valley Civiliaztions Egypt, Shang China, Mesopotamia, and India formed the civilizations on the banks of fertile rivers.
Nomad A person who moves from place to place in search of food.
Cuneiform The earliest form of writing developed by the Sumerians.
Empire A vast territory composed of many city-states or nations under the control of one central authority.
City-State A city surrounded by villages that are under one government, share an economy and religion.
