Vocabulary terms for Globes and Maps

Globe | A Model of the Earth |
Hemisphere | Any half of the Earth. |
Latitude and Longitude | Imaginary lines on a globe that measure distance. |
Cartographer | A map maker. |
Key | A part of the map that explains what symbols represent. |
Compass Rose | A part of the map that shows the four main directions. |
Political Map | A map that shows cities, capitals, and boundaries. |
Equator | A line that divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres. |
Physical Map | A map that shows natural features. |
River | A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream |
Mountain | A large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill |
Peninsula | A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water |
Island | A piece of land surrounded by water |
Strait | A narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two other large areas of water |
Sea | A large lake |
Bight | A curve or recess in a coastline, river, or other geographical feature |
Canal | An artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation |
Border | A line separating two political or geographical areas, especially countries |
Capital | The most important city or town of a country or region, usually its seat of government and administrative center |
City | A large town |
Country | A nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory |
