Northwest Passage

QuestionAnswer
Claim Something declared as one's own, especially a piece of land.
Armada A large fleet of ships
Invasion An attack by an armed force to conquer another country.
Why did European explorers search for a Northwest Passage? The European explorers wanted a shortcut to Asia, so they didn't have to sail around South America. They wanted a water route through North America.
Who was John Cabot? An Italian explorer who thought he could reach Asia by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The king of England paid for his voyage. He reached Canada and thought it was Asia.
Who was Verrazano? An Italian sea captain sent by France to look for a Northwest Passage.
Who was Cartier? He continued France's search for a water route to Asia. Sailed up the St. Lawrence River in Canada.
Who was Champlain? Founded a fur-trading post on the St. Lawrence River and called it Quebec.
What did John Cabot find during his exploration of Canada? Rich fishing area off the coast of Canada.
Who was Henry Hudson? An English captain who sailed for a Dutch trading company. Sailed up the Hudson river in present-day New York.
What did Henry Hudson find on his second voyage? He sailed for England and a found a huge bay in present-day Canada. The bay became known as Hudson Bay.
What did Francis Drake do? He was an English sea captain who attacked many Spanish ships and gave the gold and silver to Queen Elizabeth of England.
Why was King Philip of Spain angry at England? England was attacking the Spanish ships and taking the gold and silver and they had different religion beliefs.
Why did the Spanish armada prepare an invasion of England? Because of religion differences and the English attacks on Spanish ships.
