common prefixes and their meanings

auto- self / autobiography - self biography; story of someone's life told by that person / automatic transmission - the car changes gears by itself
bi- two / bicycle - a cycle with two wheels / bisect - cut in two
co- together / cooperate - to work together
extra- beyond / extraterrestrial - a creature living beyond Earth / extraordinary - beyond the ordinary
hyper- too much / hyperactive child - a child that is too active
kilo- thousand / kilowatt - 1000 watts / kilogram - 1000 grams
mal- bad / malicious - having bad intentions / malformed - badly formed
micro- small or tiny / microscope - a tool that is used to view tiny things / microorganism - a tiny living thing
multi- many or much / multiple - many, more than one / multicolored - many colors
omni- all / omniscient - knowing all / omnipresent - able to be everywhere at once omnidirectional - able to go in all directions
pre- before / preface - comes before the rest of a book / pregame warm-up - comes before the game pretest - before the test
post- after / postpone - to put off until after or later / postscript - a commentary that comes after or at the end of a book

dent- tooth / dentist - a doctor specializing in teeth dental - having to do with teeth
