Nerves

location and control of major nerves

TermDefinition
axillary nerve from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus in the axilla and supplies the deltoid and teres minor muscles.
phrenic nerve mainly from the fourth cervical nerve and is primarily the motor nerve of the diaphragm but also sends sensory fibers to the pericardium.
musculocutaneous nerve from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus, and that passes through the coracobrachial muscle and then downward between the brachial and the biceps muscles, supplying these three muscles and being prolonged as the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm
radial nerve from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus and divides into two terminal branches, designated superficial and deep, that supply muscular and cutaneous branches to the dorsal aspect of the arm and forearm.
median nerve formed by the union of the medial and lateral roots from the medial and lateral cords of the brachial plexus and supplies the muscular branches in the anterior region of the forearm and the muscular and cutaneous branches in the hand.
ulnar nerve a nerve situated along the inner side of the arm and passing close to the surface of the skin near the elbow (funny bone)
sciatic nerve pair of nerves (largest in the body) that originate in the sacral plexus of the lower back and extend down the buttocks to the back of the knees, where they divide into other nerves
femoral nerve A nerve that arises from the second, third, and fourth lumbar nerves and supplies the muscles and skin of the anterior region of the thigh.
tibial nerve One of two major divisions of the sciatic nerve, supplying the hamstring muscles, the muscles of the back of the leg, the muscles of the plantar aspect of the foot, and the skin on the back of the leg and on the sole of the foot.
common peroneal nerve A terminal division of the sciatic nerve, passing through the lateral portion of the popliteal space to opposite the head of the fibula where it divides into the superficial and the deep peroneal nerves.
