Dichotomous key A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish.
Archaea bacteria microorganisms that are similar to bacteria in size and simplicity of structure but radically different in molecular organization.
virus a tiny non living particle that invades and then reproduces inside a cell
host the organism that a parasite or virus lives in or on
parasite The organism that benifits by living in or on a host and harms it
flagellum a long whip like struture that helps a cell to move
binary fission a form of asexual reproduction in which one cell divides to form two identical cells
conjugation the process in which a unicellular organism transfers some of it genetic material to another unicellular organism
endospore a small, rounded, thicked wall, resting cell that forms inside a bacteria cell
decomposer an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
protist protists are a large and diverse group of eukaryotic microorganisms, which belong to the kingdom Protista.
protozoan a single-celled microscopic animal of a group of phyla of the kingdom Protista, such as an amoeba, flagellate, ciliate, or sporozoan.
pseudopod a temporary protrusion of the surface of an amoeboid cell for movement and feeding.
cilia identical in structure to flagella that line the surfaces of certain cells and beat in rhythmic waves
algae ny of numerous groups of chlorophyll-containing, mainly aquatic eukaryotic organisms ranging from microscopic single-celled forms to multicellular forms
spore a walled, single- to many-celled, reproductive body of an organism, capable of giving rise to a new individual either directly or indirectly.
fungi classification schemes a division of the kingdom Plantae, comprising all the fungus groups and sometimes also the slime molds.
hyphae one of the threadlike elements of the mycelium.
fruiting body an organ that produces spores; fructification.
budding a prominence that develops into a new individual, sometimes permanently attached to the parent and sometimes becoming detached
