FINISH WITH | to have no further need for something | “Can I throw away this newspaper?” “No, I haven‟t finished with it yet.” |
STOP OFF | to make a short break in a journey | On your way home could you stop off at the shops and get some milk? |
END IN | the final result / outcome | The party ended in a fight and the police were called. |
FINISH OFF WITH | to have something at the end | It was a great meal. We finished off with brandy and cigars. |
START UP | to establish your own business | I‟m starting up my own business next month. I‟m going to open a restaurant. |
FINISH OFF | to destroy / kill / consume / complete | Poor Mr. Stevens had been ill for sometime but it was the terribly cold winter that finally finished him off. |
END UP | what you actually did despite earlier intentions | We‟d planned to eat out but we ended up walking around town all evening looking for a decent restaurant |
STOP OUT | to stay out all night | “What time did Peter come home?” “He didn‟t. He stopped out all night.” |
START ON | to begin a job / task | We‟ve got so much housework to do. You can start on the washing while I clean the bath. |
START BACK | to begin your return journey home | Oh, look at the time. I‟d better start back, it‟s getting late. |
