TermDefinition
allusion A reference to a statement, a person, a place, or an event from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, or science.
analogy A similarity between two like things that can be compared.
antonym A word with an opposite meaning.
argument A discussion involving different points of views.
claim An arguable statement.
clause A group of words that contains a verb and its subject and that is used in a part of a sentence.
complex sentence Has one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause.
compound sentence Has two or more independent clauses (joined by a coordinate conjunction) but no subordinate clauses.
compound- complex sentence Two independent clauses and one subordinate clause. Use process of elimination.
context Using the words around an unknown word to determine meaning.
counter claim A claim made to offset another claim.
dangling modifier The modifier is misplaced or dangling there.
description Elaborating on something with detail.
dialogue A conversation between two or more people.
figurative language Imagery used in writing.
logic Reason or sound judgement.
narrative The story is told from a narrator's point of view.
narrator A person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences, etc.
nuance Slight variation in tone or color. A subtle difference in meaning or appearance.
opposing claim A claim against your thesis statement.
organization Things in a method or easy to follow way.
pacing Keeping everything smooth and continuous.
phrase Two or more words that are part of a sentence.
point of view How you look at something.
sensory detail Details in a story about a character.
sequence The order that things happen.
simple sentence Has a subject and a verb but has to be a complete sentence. Could be a clause.
structure How parts of a sentence, paragraph, etc. are arranged.
synonym Two words that have similar meanings.
time shift Flashbacks
topic The subject of a speech, book, etc.
transition Moving from one paragraph to another smoothly.
