allusion | A reference to a statement, a person, a place, or an event from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, or science. |
analogy | A similarity between two like things that can be compared. |
antonym | A word with an opposite meaning. |
argument | A discussion involving different points of views. |
claim | An arguable statement. |
clause | A group of words that contains a verb and its subject and that is used in a part of a sentence. |
complex sentence | Has one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. |
compound sentence | Has two or more independent clauses (joined by a coordinate conjunction) but no subordinate clauses. |
compound- complex sentence | Two independent clauses and one subordinate clause. Use process of elimination. |
context | Using the words around an unknown word to determine meaning. |
counter claim | A claim made to offset another claim. |
dangling modifier | The modifier is misplaced or dangling there. |
description | Elaborating on something with detail. |
dialogue | A conversation between two or more people. |
figurative language | Imagery used in writing. |
logic | Reason or sound judgement. |
narrative | The story is told from a narrator's point of view. |
narrator | A person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences, etc. |
nuance | Slight variation in tone or color. A subtle difference in meaning or appearance. |
opposing claim | A claim against your thesis statement. |
organization | Things in a method or easy to follow way. |
pacing | Keeping everything smooth and continuous. |
phrase | Two or more words that are part of a sentence. |
point of view | How you look at something. |
sensory detail | Details in a story about a character. |
sequence | The order that things happen. |
simple sentence | Has a subject and a verb but has to be a complete sentence. Could be a clause. |
structure | How parts of a sentence, paragraph, etc. are arranged. |
synonym | Two words that have similar meanings. |
time shift | Flashbacks |
topic | The subject of a speech, book, etc. |
transition | Moving from one paragraph to another smoothly. |
