What kind of music was most important during the Middle Ages? In the Middle Ages religious music was most important, especially in churches and monasteries.
What was the single most important change in music to happen during the Renaissance? The music changed in the Renaissance because people wanted to hear it in their homes, not only in churches. They made music looser and not as religious.
What is the Mass, and what type of music did a Renaissance Mass involve? Mass celebrates Christ’s last supper. Mass is held in a Catholic church. Renaissance Mass had acapella music, which meant no instruments just people’s voices.
What were common topics of secular music in the Renaissance? Common topics of secular music were interesting stories or love.
Name at least two famous Renaissance composers and describe the music they wrote. Josquin Desprez wrote sacred music and secular music. One of his songs is called “Faulte d’argent”, which means “I need money!” Palestrina wrote madrigals, but mostly sacred music. A madrigal is a song sung by two to eight people.
What is a pavane? What is a galliard? What is the difference between the two? A pavane is a formal dance and a galliard is a lively dance. The difference between the two is that they are exact opposites.
What were two instruments that were popular during the Renaissance? The lute and recorder were two popular instruments during the Renaissance.
What does it mean to say that someone is “quixotic,” and where does the word come from? The word “quixotic” comes from the book “Don Quixote”, and it is a person who is a dreamer.
What were some of the difficulties that Cervantes encountered during his life? Cervantes’ ship was attacked by pirates, he was thrown into prison by pirates and he couldn’t get a job.
What didn’t Don Quixote make Cervantes rich? Other people printed and sold the book and claimed to have written it and never gave Cervantes money for it.
What type of book was Cervantes making fun of when he wrote DonQuixote? The book “Don Quixote” was making fun of the romance of chivalry.
What is Don Quixote like, and why does he appeal to many readers despite his foolishness? He appeals to many readers because he follows his dreams and he is noble and generous at heart.
What are the title of some of his plays? The titles of some of his plays are “Romeo and Juliette”, “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Hamlet”.
Who was Johann Gutenberg? Johann Gutenberg was the inventor of the printing press.
