What was reborn during the Renaissance? Old ideas and discoveries (ART)
Describe how Italy’s location contributed to the beginnings of the Renaissance? Italy was close to many cities and water so people can trade easily, and boats can come in with goods
Name and describe the three classes in the Renaissance. Nobility, middle/clergy, and peasants. Nobility are the wealthiest, middle and clergy are in the middle and the church, and peasants are poor.
What was a patron? A patron is someone who pays artists and get the art,they are merchants.
Where did artists get their money? Artists got their money from patrons.
What do Greece and Rome have to do with the Renaissance? They rediscovered cultures and new ideas.
Who were the Medici? Where did they live? The medici were a rich and powerful renaissance family, they lived in Florence.
What were the major accomplishments of Cosimo and Lorenzo de Medici? Lorenzo ruled both the Florantine state and a vast commercial empire. Cosimo was a prince and trained lorenzo to be the next ruler.
What did Savonarola dislike about the Medici leaders? How did he attempt to govern Florence when he was in charge? Savonarola didn't like that the Medicis ate too much, drank too much, dressed immodestly, cared too much about their fancy belongings. Savonarola tried to make Florenca a model of christian virtue.
Why did the popes decide to become patrons of the arts? Popes wanted to become patrons because they wanted to restore glory in the church.
How did Venice become a powerful city? Venice became powerful because it was a great trading city.
What is a Gondola? Where would you find one? A gondola boat which carries tourists on the water. You could find gondolas in the heart of Venice.
What experiences led Niccolo Machiavelli to write The Prince? Niccolo saw all the fighting and thought about how a prince should defend himself and the people.
In Machiavelli’s opinion, what is the chief goal of a prince? To stay in power.
Did Machiavelli believe that rulers should always keep their word and tell the truth? If not, what did he believe?He believed rulers should lie and not tell the truth.
What does it mean when we hear someone described as “Machiavellian?” It means that person is crafty, sneaky, power hungry, willing to do anything to get what he wanted.
In what ways was Cesare Borgia a Machiavellian prince? He was cruel dangerous and violant.
