Unit 4 Vocab for Lewis

TermDefinition
Atomic Mass Average mass of one atom of an element.
Periodic Table A chart where all evidence is organized in periods and groups.
Chemical Symbol One or two letter code that stands for an element.
Period A row of elements in the periodic table arranged by atomic number.
Group A column of elements in the periodic table, in which elements have certain properties in common.
Matter The material that all objects and substances are made of.
Element Subtances that are the building blocks of all matter.
Compound Matter made of two or more elements.
Atom Smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have properties of that element.
Electron Negatively charged particle found outside the nucleous of an atom.
Nucleus Structure near the center of a cell that contains the cells DNA.
Proton A small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of the Atom.
Neutron A cell that carries information through the nervous system.
Energy level The amount of energy carried by an electron in an atom.
Isotope Atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons in the nucleus.
Mass Number The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Number Number of protons in the nucleus of one atom of an element.
Metal Elements, usually solid, with shiny surface.
Malleable A term used to describe material.
Ductile Material that can be pulled out into a long wire.
Conductivity Transfer of heat from a warmer substance to a cooler substance through direct contact.
Reactivity The state or power of being reactive or the degree to which a thing is reactive.
Corrosion Some metal react with oxygen in the air.
Akali Metal A group of elements in group 1.
Allkaline Earth Metal An element in group 2.
Transition Metal Element in group 3.
Alloy A mixture of one or more elements.
Nonmetal An element that lacks most of the properties.
Diatomic Molecule A molecule consisting of two atoms.
Halogens Elements in group 7A.
Nobel Gases Elements in group 18.
Metalloid Element that has some characteristics of both metal and nonmetal.
Semi Conductor A substance that can conduct electricity.
