Atomic Mass Average mass of one atom of an element
Periodic Table A chart where all elements are organized into periods and groups according to their properties
Chemical symbol One-or-two letter code that stands for an element
Period A row of elements in the periodic table arranged by atomic number
Group Column of elements in the periodic table, in which elements have certain properties in common
Matter The material that all objects and substances are made of
Element Substances that are the building blocks of all matter
Compound Matter made of two or more elements and cannot be seperated by physical means
Atom Smallest partcile in which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element
Electron Negatively charged particle found outside the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus Structure near the center of a cell that contains the cell's DNA
Proton Positively charged particle located in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron In an atom, particle with a neutral charge; located in the nucleus
Energy Level The amount of energy carried by an electron in an atom
Isotope Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus, and thus different atomic masses
Mass number The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic number Numbers of protons in the nucleus of one atom of an element
Metal Elements, usually solid, with a shiny surface
Malleable A term used to describe material that can be pounded into shapes
Ductile A term used to describe a material that can be pulled out into a longwire
Conductivity The ability of an object to transfer heat or electricity to another object
Reactivity The ease and speed with which an element combines, or reacts, with other elements and compunds
Corrosion The gradual wearing away of a metal element due to a chemical reaction
Alkali Metal An element in group 1 of the periodic table
Alkaline Earth Metal An element in group 2 of the periodic table
Transition Metal One of the elements in group 3 through 12 of the periodic table
Alloy A mixture of two or more elements, one of which is a metal
Nonmetal An element that lacks most of the properties of a metal
Diatomic Metal A molecule consisting of two atoms
Halogen Group of elements in the periodic table that are highly reactive nonmetals
Noble Gas Group of elements in the periodic table that generally does not react with other elements
Metalloid An element that has some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals
Semiconductor A substance that can conduct electricity under some conditions
