Force and Motion

Force and Motion Texas 6th grade TEKS based

QuestionAnswer
What is a result of a force moving an object over a distance? Work
What is the formula for work? Work = Force X Distance
What is a force that resists motion? Friction
What is the speed at which something is moving AND the direction it is going? Velocity
What two things are important to know about velocity? Speed and direction
What is a push or pull on an object that will change its state of motion? Force
What is the rate at which the position of an object changes? It is the distance something travels divided by the time it took. Speed
What is the formula for speed? Speed = Distance ÷ Time
What is the force of attraction between any two objects in the universe? Gravity
Friction produces what? Heat
What is an object’s change in position relative to a reference point over a period of time? Motion
What is the rate at which the velocity is changing? (Slowing down OR speeding up, OR changing directions). Acceleration
A force that moves something away from you. Push
A force that moves something towards you. Pull
What force results whenever two or more forces act upon an object in such a way as to exactly counteract each other? A balanced force.
Motion along a curve or through a circle is always caused by this force. This is a force that pushes an object in an inward direction. The moon orbits the earth in a circular motion because a force of gravity pulls on the moon in an inward direction towar centripetal force
What is a tendency of an object to resist change in its state of motion? inertia
Which of Newton's Law's state: An object at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line will remain at rest or in the same uniform motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This is also known as the law of inertia. Newton's First Law of Motion or the Law of Inertia
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the total unbalanced force exerted on the object, and is inversely proportional to the mass of the object (in other words, as mass increases, the acceleration has to decrease). Newton's Second Law of Motion or the law of acceleration
Which of Newton's Law states? If one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the object body. This is also known as the law of interaction. Newton's Third Law of Motion or law of interaction
Who was one of the greatest physicists of all time? He developed a great many theories well ahead of the times that they could be investigated or confirmed. Virtually all of his theories have been confirmed, for example E=mc2 Albert Einstein
