Contraindications from Meds to Massage Therapy

Anti-Asthmatic Meds Cause an increase in SNS Response, such as increased HR and respiration rates, and in increase in BP. *If increase in BP is present, techniques that are vigorous, deep or painful and hydrotherapy application of heat are CI'd Ventolin is an example
Anticoagulants Slow the clotting process. It's possible that deep techniques such as deep repetitive MM Stri[ping and frictions may lead to bruising. Asprin, Coumadin, and heparin are examples
Antidepressants may alter normal responses of the vasculature to temp changes. Hydrotherapy applications should be moderate temps, and local in nature and must be monitored visually and by palpation for adverse reactions. Full Body Hydrotherapy applications are CI'd Diazepam (Valium), Prozac and Paxil are examples
Anti-Inflammatories suppression of the inflammatory process can make an assessment inaccurate. Techniques such as frictions that rely on the response are CI'd Asprin, Tylenol, and Clinoril are examples
Corticosteroids Specialized Anti-inflammatories appear in various forms including injections, creams, and tablets. injection sites are avoided for 14-21 days. Techniques that stress tissue such as facial techniques, frictions and Joint play are CI'd Topicort, Cortisol, corticocream and Aclovate are examples
Muscle Relaxants These act on the neuromuscular junction, altering the stretch response of the subcutaneous tissue. Deep Techniques, Extreme stretches and full body hydrotherapy are CI'd Flexeril, Diazepam(Valium) and nor flex are examples
Analgesics Client will be unable to give accurate information about the perception of pain. Deep pressure and Extreme ROM are CI'd EX. Asprin, Tylenol, Anaprox, and motrin are examples
