20 literary terms for poetry

allusion an indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
assonance the repetition of vowel sounds within nonrhyming words
consonance the repetition of consonant sounds within and at the end of words
couplet a rhymed pair of lines
imagery descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader
metaphor a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common
meter a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem
narrative poetry tells a story or recounts events
repetition a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity
rhyme scheme a pattern of end rhymes in a poem
rhythm the use of stressed and unstressed syllables to bring out the musical quality of language in a poem
simile a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, using the word like or as
speaker the voice that "talks" to the reader, similar to the narrator in fiction
symbolism the use of a person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself
theme an underlying message or idea about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand
tone the attitude a writer takes toward a subject
analyze to examine methodically and in detail
interpret to explain the meaning of
paraphrase to express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using your own words
visualize to form a mental image of
