Essay Vocabulary
Academic Vocabulary needed for the essay writing process.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Thesis Statment | One sentence that summarizes what an essay is about. It is supported by evidence in the essay. |
Introduction | First paragraph in an essay. Gives a thesis statement, captures the reader’s attention. |
Topic Sentence | Sentence that gives the main idea of a paragraph. |
Transitional Phrase | Words that come at the beginning of a sentence and are followed by a comma. The words create flow and connect ideas. |
Text Evidence | Sentences that support your thesis and come from a text. This can be a quote or a paraphrase. You must say where you got the information from. |
Cite | Using evidence to prove a point. |
In-text Citation | A piece of text evidence that is a direct quote and the author has been named. |
Elaboration | Adding descriptive details to body paragraphs. |
Body Paragraphs | Comes after the introduction. Paragraphs must have a topic sentence. Must have evidence and elaborating support for the thesis. |
Focus | Creating a clear thesis and sticking to that thesis statement throughout the entire essay. |
Organization | How you arrange your ideas. In an essay, you should have an introduction with a thesis. Then body paragraphs with evidence. And finally a conclusion that reflects what you have learned. |
Conclusion | Final paragraph in your essay. Do not just reword your thesis.You must reflect on what you have learned and what you wanted your reader to learn. |
