Early Civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus River Valley

Paleolithic age Stone age characterized by nomadic people with basic stone tools
Nomad Someone who travels from place to place in search of food
Neolithic age The change from hunting and gathering to herding, farming, permanent settlements and specialized jobs
Ziggurat A massive pyramid-like temple built in Ancient Mesopotamia
Fertile Crescent The arc-shaped area that stretches from the eastern Mediterranean along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to the Persian Gulf
Cuneiform Ancient Sumerian wedge-shaped writing system
Hieroglyphics Ancient Egyptian writing system that used pictures and symbols to represent words and sounds
Civilization Highly organized society with its own language and ways of life.
Subsistence Farming Producing just enough food for oneself (no surplus)
Fertile Crescent The arc-shaped area of land that stretches between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers
