DRE Categories

Signs DRE looks for to determine type of intoxication

CategoryObservations
CNS Depressants Pupil size normal. HGN, VGN present. Lack of smooth convergence. Decreased pulse, blood pressure. Normal body temperature. Flaccid muscle tone. No injection sites. Reaction to light slow.
CNS Stimulants Dilated pupils. No HGN, VGN. Smooth convergence. Elevated pulse, blood pressure, body temperature. Rigid muscle tone. Injection sites present. Reaction to light slow.
Hallucinogens Dilated pupils. No HGN, VGN. Smooth convergence. Elevated pulse, blood pressure, body temperature. Rigid muscle tone. No injection sites. Reaction to light normal.
Dissociative Anesthetic Pupil size normal. HGN, VGN present. Lack of smooth convergence. Elevated pulse, blood pressure, body temperature. Rigid muscle tone. No injection sites. Reaction to light normal.
Narcotic Analgesic Constricted pupils. No HGN, VGN. Smooth convergence. Decreased pulse, blood pressure, body temperature. Flaccid muscle tone. Injection sites possible. Little or no reaction to light.
Cannabis Normal or slightly dilated pupils. No HGN, VGN. Lack of smooth convergence. Elevated pulse, blood pressure. Normal body temperature. No injection sites. Reaction to light normal.
Inhalants Normal or dilated pupils. HGN, VGN present. Lack of smooth convergence. Elevated pulse. Elevated or decreased blood pressure, body temperature. Flaccid or normal muscle tone. No injection sites. Reaction to light slow.
