Energy Vocabulary

Energy vocabulary for 6th grade science

TermDefinition
Conduction the transfer of heat by objects touching or particles withing objects touching
convection the transfer of heat by the movement of fluids (liquids and gases)
radiation the transfer of heat by electromagnet waves
inclined plane a sloping surface, like a ramp, that reduces the force required to move an object
lever a rigid bar or board that is free to move around a fixed point called a fulcrum that reduces the force needed to lift an object
pulley a grooved wheel with a rope running along the groove that can change the amount of force needed to move an object or the direction of the force
simple machine a device that helps reduce the force required to do work
work when force is applied over a distance to move an object: work =force X distance
scissors and crow bar examples of tools that are levers with the fulcrum in the center of the lever arm
tweezers, broom, wheel barrow, bottle opener examples of tools that have the fulcrum on the end of the lever arm
block and tackle system type of pulley system
wedge one or two back-to-back inclined planes
screw inclined plane wound around a post or cylinder
wheel and axle two circular objects: a central shaft inserted through the middle of a wheel
door knob, steering wheel, screwdriver, and gears examples of wheel and axle
complex machine (compound machine) consisits of two or more simple machines
heat energy the transfer of thermal energy (energy associated with the motion of the particles of a substance)
solar energy energy from the sun
chemical energy energy stored in particles of matter
electrical energy energy flowing in an electric circuit
mechanical energy energy due to the motion and position of an object
kinetic energy energy an object has due to its motion
mechanical potential energy energy related to the position of an object
