round character fully developed personality showing many sides and perhaps unpredictable behavior
dynamic character experiences a dynamic change in attitude or personality at some point in the text or passage
idiom a phrase or expression associated with a specific culture or people
dialect the idioms and pronunciations used in spoken and written language in different regions of the country
legend oral and written storytelling that may have some truth but focuses on exaggerated physical strength/courage
myth oral and written storytelling that may involve supernatural beings
fable oral or written storytelling that teaches a moral or lesson
personification giving human qualities to inanimate objects
imagery descriptive language using sensory words to paint a picture in the reader's mind
simile a comparison between two things using the word like or the word as
metaphor a comparison between two things (nouns)
symbol stands for or represents a person, place, thing, or event
hyperbole an exaggeration or overstatement
free verse poetry without a set meter or rhyme
verse poetry with a set meter or rhyme
stanza a group of consecutive lines in a poem
sonnet a poem of 14 lines with length and rhymes that follow one of several patterns
ballad a simple song or poem that tells a story
alliteration the repeating of initial consonant sounds in words in a line of writing (usually poetry)
onomatopoeia the use of a word whose sound suggests its meaning
