Amylase A digestive enzyme that breaks down starch.
Chemical Digestion Enzyme activity.
Enzyme A protein that is capable of speeding up a chemical reaction.
Mechanical Digestion Tearing, grinding, and mixing of food in the mouth.
Saliva A watery substance produced by three glands that helps to break down food. It contains amylase.
Sphincter A ring of muscle that keeps swallowed food in the stomach.
Trachea The windpipe.
Bolus A big soggy ball of food that triggers a swallowing reflex.
Epiglottis A flap that closes over the trachea when we swallow so that food goes to the stomach.
