Movements

TermDefinition
Flexion Movement that decreases the angle of the joint along the Sagittal plane
Extension Movement that increases the angle of the joint along the Sagittal plane
Hyperextension Movement that extends a body part beyond the anatomical position or beyond what the joint "normally" allows
Side Flexion/ Lateral Flexion Movement of the trunk in the frontal plane so that the lateral joint decreases
Dorsiflexion Movement of the ankle so that the superior aspect of the foot is close to the shin "Toes to Nose"
Plantar-flexion Movement of the ankle so that the toes are pointed downwards
Abduction Movement of a limb or body part away from the midline of the body; along the frontal plane
Adduction Movement of a limb or body party towards the midline of the body; along the frontal plane
Circumduction Circular movement that includes flexion,extension, abduction and adduction
Rotation Turning movement of a bone around it's own long axis
Medial/Internal Rotation Turning movement towards the midline
Lateral/External Rotation Turning movement away from the midline
Supination Movement of the forearm so the palm faces up
Pronation Movement of the forearm so the palm faces down
Inversion Movement of the foot so that the sole is towards the midline
Eversion Movement of the foot so that the sole is turned laterally
Protraction anterior movement in a transverse plane
Retraction posterior movement in a transverse plane
Elevation Movement of a bone superiorly along the frontal plane
Depression Movement of a bone inferiorly alone the frontal plane
