Investigation and Scientific Reasoning

descriptive investigation An investigation that uses observations of quantitative and qualitative skills/ this doesn't have a hypothesis
comparative investigation an investigation that tells you how changing one factor changes the data by comparing two or more things... has a hypothesis
experimental investigation an investigation that has controlled factors but one factor is changed to see a cause and effect relationship... has a hypothesis
science An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural and man-made world.
observation Information gained through qualitative or quantitative skills
inference A logical conclusion based on observations with past knowledge and experience
collect gather data
record saving data through written or technological devices
safety being protected from or unlikely to cause also known as prevention
Corrosive eating away gradually by chemicals like acid and bases
Flammable Able to catch fire easily
Flush to spray or wash away
irritant a substance that causes slight inflammation (hot or reddening) with discomfort to the body
qualitative Data in the form of words through senses
quantitative data that is recorded as numbers or mathematically
variable A factor that can change in an experiment
independent variable a factor that is changed or manipulated so that a relation can be seen with others that were not changed
dependent variable the factor that changes or responds because another factor was first manipulated
controlled variable Factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely keeps the same
controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time.
theory a hypothesis that has been tested with lots of times and is reliable
hypothesis a educated answer to a question that is testable or predictable
