What is an antigen? A protein found on the outside of ANY cell.
What is an antibody? Y-shaped molecules that attach to antigens.
How is Rh factor determined? Blood cells with the Rh or D protein are Rh positive. Ones without this protein are Rh negative.
What are the 4 major components of blood? red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma
What is the function of red blood cells? to carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells
What is the function of white blood cells? to fight of diseases and other harmful objects in the blood
What is the function of platelets? to form blood clots and stop bleeding
What is the function of plasma? to transport materials in the blood
Which blood cells contain DNA? white blood cells
What does the term agglutination mean? when antibodies attach to antigens and form clumps in the blood
What does it mean for someone to be RH positive? The red blood cells of the individual have the RH antigen or the D antigen
Which ANTIBODIES are found in type A+ blood? antibodies against type B
Which ANTIBODIES are found in type B+ blood? antibodies against type A
Which ANTIBODIES are found in type O+ blood? antibodies against type BOTH A and B
Which ANTIBODIES are found in type AB+ blood? no blood type antibodies

What does it mean for someone to be Rh negative? The red blood cells do NOT contain the antigen or protein for Rh.
What does it mean to say that blood clots? Platelets and fibrin fibers attach to each other and form a CLOT on the broken vessel.
