Hampshire -British Breed -Developed in Hampshire, England -Distinct white belt around its front quarter, that includes the front legs -Erect ears, lean carcass
Landrace -European Breed -Developed in Denmark -Known for producing large litters, good mothers, and raise them till weaning age -relatively long bodies, ears that flop over eyes
Poland China -American Breed -Ohio -Cross of Russian, Byfield, Big China, Berkshire, and Irish Grazer stock -large black hogs with white feet, faces, and tails, forward flopping ears -low backfat, large loin eyes
Spotted -American Breed -Indiana -Crossing Poland China with native hogs -Large framed, covered with black and white spots
Yorkshire -European Breed -Yorkshire of England -Large white pig with long body, erect ears -Grow quickly and efficiently use feed
Berkshire -British Breed -Berkshire, England -Black with white faces, feet, and tail -Registry was the first registry for pure blood swines in the world
Chester (White) -American Breed -Pennsylvania -Crossing Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Cheshire -Moderate size, white hog, forward flopping ears
Duroc -American Breed -Eastern US -distinct red hog, color also ranges from yellow to a dark mahogany red, ears flop slightly forward -typically grow quickly
Holstein (Friesian) -Continental Breed -Netherlands -Most popular breed in the United States -Black and white color pattern -Produce highest volume of fluid milk per cow of any breed -lowest bufferfat production of the common dairy breeds -Largest of the dairy breeds (1500)
Jersey -British Breed -Isle of Jersey -Smallest of dairy breeds (900) -Light fawn color, dished face, large dark eyes -excellent utter conformation, use feed efficiently -produce highest volume of milk per pound -high in butterfat content -hot temperment
Brown Swiss -Continental Breed -Switzerland -Oldest breeds of dairy cattle -Originally dual-purpose, popular draft animals -Light to dark brown, slow to mature, long lived, nose and tounge black -Produce volume of milk second to Holstien -US in 1800s
Guernsey -British Breed -Isle of Guernsey -From foundation stock of French cattle -US in 1830 -Mod. producers of milk -Golden and white color -Second to Jerseys in amount of fat produced in the milk -Efficient production, adapted to warm climates -birthing ease
Ayrshire -British Breed -Scotland -Red and white in color -Mod size (1200) -Dist. curve up and back horns -produce effeciently, good grazing, superior shape and quality utter -
Milking Shorthorn -British Breed -Northern England -Multiple colors -Developed for multi purpose; meat milk draft -Hardy and adapted to a wide variety of climates -US in 1783 -Bulls (2400)
