Energy (Baldwin)

What is energy? the ability to do work
What is kinetic energy? energy in motion
What is potential energy? stored energy, energy of position
What is joule? unit used to measure work or used to measure thermal energy
What is Temperature? a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object or substance
What is Absolute Zero? the lowest temperature,0 K, on the Kelvin scale; the temperature at which all molecular motion stops.
What is Thermal expansion? an increase in the size of a substance in response to an increase in temperature of the substance(due to particles moving faster and spreading)
What is Thermal equilibrium? the point at which two objects that are touching reach the same temperature
What is Heat? ENERGY transferred between objects that are at different temperatures
What is Thermal ENERGY? Total kinetic energy of the particles in a subsatnce
What is Conductor? a material through which energy can be transferred easily
What is Insulator? a material through which heat (thermal energy)cannot be transferred easily
What is Conduction? the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact
What is Convention? the transfer of thermal energy by circulation,in a liquid or gas
What is Radiation? the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves
What is Specific heat? the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius
What is Calorie? the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius
