What is the main goal of psychotherapy? | Changing some aspect of our thinking/though processing/behavior in order to help with a mental disorder/abnormal behavior/mental issue |
What is psychoanalysis? | Based on identifying unconscious thoughts and emotions and brining them to consciousness to help people understand of their thoughts and actions |
What are some techniques of psychoanalysis? | Free associations, dreams, hypnosis |
What is Behavior Therapy? | A treatment technique that begins with clear, well-defined behavioral goals, and then attempts to achieve those goals through learning and the strengthening of behavioral connections. Usually used only for specific disorders/problems |
What is Cognitive Therapy? | A treatment technique that seeks to improve people's psychological well-being by changing their thoughts and beliefs |
Cognitive-behavioral therapy | A form of therapy that emphasizes that problems are a result of one's interpretation of their situation that they are experience and their interpretation of themselves |
Rational-emotive behavior therapy | A form of CBT that assumes that problems are a result of one's inappropriate/irrational emotional reactions to situations, not the unpleasant emotions themselves |
What is the Humanistic Therapy | Based on the belief that mental disorders are often product of misperceptions or an incongruence of selves |
Person-centered therapy | Pioneered by Carl Rogers. Incorporate total acceptance and unconditional positive regard of the patient in therapy sessions. Involves mirroring and patient focused therapy |
What are other kinds of psychotherapy? | Family systems therapy, brief therapy, group therapy, self-help groups, eclectic therapy |
