Matter Quiz

QuestionAnswer
(1) What is matter? Anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything that you see is matter.
(2) What is a Chemical Property? Tells how matter can change into new kinds of matter. For example: Paper that was burnt are now ashes.
(3) What is a Physical Property? How matter looks, feels, smells, tastes and sounds. For example: Paper that was ripped up are now smaller pieces of paper. A physical property doesn't change its form.
(4) What is an element? A type of matter that cannot be broken down into anything else.
(5) What is an atom? The smallest part of an element.
(6) What is a chemical bond? It holds atoms together with a pulling force.
(7) What is a compound? It is made up of two or more elements joined together from atoms.
(8) What is a mixture? It is made up of more than one compound or element.
(9) What is a solution? A type of mixture. An example of a weak solution is trail mix. An example of a strong solution is chocolate milk.
(10) What is Density? It relates the mass of an object to its volume.
(11) What is weight? It measures the pull of gravity on an object.
(12) What is Mass? The amount of matter in an object.
(13) What is Volume? How much space matter takes up.
(14) What are the three states matter can be found in? Liquid, solid, and gas.
(15) What unit of measure do we normally use to measure volume? Cm 3
(16) What unit of measure do we normally use to measure mass? Grams
(17) How do you read a graduated Cylinder? You go down to eye level and see where the bottom of the curve is (AKA the meniscus) in in the liquid. You then count from the bottom to the top all of the "tick" marks until you get to the bottom of the curve.
(18) What is the Curved Water line inside a graduated cylinder called? It is called the meniscus.
(19) Why does mass remain the same and weight will change if you are on different planets? Mass is how much "stuff" is in an object. Weight measures the pull of gravity on an object and the pull of gravity is different on every planet.
(20) What is a molecule? Two or more atoms joined together.
