Alliteration The repetition of the initial sound(s) or stressed syllables in neighboring words
Bias Against a particular person, position, or thing, a prejudice
Character A figure in the literary work that is either a human being or a figure who possesses human qualities and is portrayed in human terms
Character Types ·dynamic characters: change in a significant way during the course of a story ·static characters: remain the same throughout the story
Conflict The action which occurs when a protagonist is opposed by some person or force in the plot of a drama
Connotation The implicit, rather than explicit, meaning of a word, consisting of the suggestions, associations, and emotional overtones attached to a word such as cheap and inexpensive
Context Clues The words or sentences that help a reader comprehend the meaning of an unfamiliar portion of text
Fiction An imaginative literary work representing inventive rather than actual persons, places, or events
Flashback The technique of disrupting the chronological flow of a narrative by interjecting events that have occurred at an earlier time
Foreshadowing The method used to build suspense by providing hints of what is to come in a drama or a narrative
Graphic features Sources of information included in texts, such as charts, graphs, pictures, or graphic organizer that assist in comprehension
Hyperbole A figure of speech which is an overstatement or an exaggeration used to make a point
Idiom An expression in a given language that is unique in its expression and meaning that cannot be understood or interpreted on a literal level
Imagery ·the use of language that creates a sensory impression within the reader’s mind ·an “image” of something that can be perceived by one of the five senses
Inference ·the act or process of drawing a conclusion based on what one already knows either from prior knowledge, ·observations, or evidence found in the text when making an inference, ideas and facts are implied or suggested rather than stated outright.
