Construction of research hypothesis Tentative and testable prediction of the relationship between two or more events or characteristics. Always starts with it is hypothesised that...
Identification of operational independent and dependent variables IV: The variable that is manipulated by the researcher before the experiment. It is independent. DV: Dependent on the IV, expected to change according to the IV.
Reporting Conventions A report constructed on the research study. They are widely recognised standards or rules about how a report is written and presented.
Random Sampling Everyone in the population of interest to the researcher has an equal chance of being selected.
Stratified Sampling Dividing the popultaion into two subgroups or "Strata" and then selecting seperate samples from each Stratum.
Random- Stratified sampling Identifying all the people of interest in the Stratum and selecting randomly the samples of proportionate size from each Stratum.
Random Allocation Participants selected for the experiment have the same chance to be in one group then the other in the experiment.
Control and experimental groups Control: In the control condition, where the IV is absent. Experimental: Exposed to the experimental condition where the IV is present and is being investigated.
Case Studies In-depth investigation of a behaviour, event of interest in an individual, group or situation.
Observational Studies Collecting data by carefully watching and recording behaviour as it occurs.
Self-reports The participant's response to questions, statements or instructions given by the researcher.
Questionnaires A set of written questions asked by the researcher to the participants and they answer.
Interviews Spoken set of questions or statements by the researcher to the participants.
