what major fault type is related to divergent? normal fault
what are seismic waves? a wave of energy that travels through the earth away from an earthquake in all directions.
what are the 3 types of seismic waves? s,p and surface
What is the difference between P and S waves? The s waves move side to side the p waves move back and forth.

what is a focus? the point along a fault at which the first motion of an earthquake occurs
whats epicenter? the point along a fault at which the first motion of an earthquake occurs
How do seismologists forecast earthquakes? They forecast them by 2 S-P time method- The s-p method is used to find the epicenter.
what are the scales? The richter scale and the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale.
What is earthquake hazard? It is a measurement of how likely an area is to have damaging earthquakes in the future.
How does the strength of an earthquake relate to the frequency of earthquakes? strength of earthquakes is related to how it often the occur.
Explain the gap hypothesis. The gap hypothesis is based on the idea that the sections of active faults that have had relatively few earthquakes are likely to be the sites of strong earthquakes in the future.
whats mass damper? weight placed in the roof to countreact the building movement
whats cross braces? weight placed in the roof to countreact the building movement
