Scientific Inquiry (5th Grade Terms)

scientific inquiry a fancy way of describing how scientists go about finding answers to questions about the natural world
scientific observations what scientists do when they use their five senses to describe the natural world; often made during an experiment
experiment a test or trial that produces evidence you can use to answer a question
measurement describes a quantity such as time, length, distance, mass, volume, or temperature
scientific ideas models, theories, or laws that are developed using evidence gathered from a scientific observation
models a simplified representation that explains what a part of something looks like or how it works
theories a set of ideas that tie together many observations
laws describes how some part of nature acts under certain conditions
prediction a statement of what you think will happen under certain conditions based on what you know from your observations and research
