Volcano Vocab
| Term | Definition |

| Volcano | any place where gas, ash or melted rock comes out of the ground |
| Magma | melted rock that is found beneath the Earth's surface |
| Lava | magma or melted rock that has reached the Earth's surface. |
| Vent | the opening of a volcano |
| Viscosity (Not an important word!!!) | the resutance of a liquid material to flow the viscosity of the magma determines the type of eruption that occurs Low viscosity- forms low slopes, doesn't cause large explosions High viscosity- form steep slopes and can erupt explosively |
| pyroclastic materials | hot ash and bits of rock that may be ejected into the atmosphere they can build up and care create volcanic mountains |
| tectonic plates | giant sections of the Earth's crust |
| hot spot | a location where a column of extremly hot mantle rises through the Earth's layers it can melt partially to form magma that can rise to the surface and form a volcano |
