origin stable or fixed end of muscle
insertion movable side of muscle
motor neurons nerve cell that carries impulses away from the central nervous system toward periphery; special nerve cells that skeletal muscles are stimulated to
acetylcholine neurotransmitter, contained w/in synoptic vesicles in the axon terminal
sarcolemma where receptor sites for acetylcholine are located
muscle tone (tonus) continued state of partial contraction that is present in muscles; helps maintain posture
isotonic same tone/tension; length of muscle changes
isometric same measurement
agonist prime mover
synergist muscle that works w/ or assists prime mover to cause movement
antagonist muscles that oppose or reverse a particular movement
naming muscles usually describes a feature such as size, shape, direction of fibers, location, # of origins, origin & insertion, action
