Barnes - Techniques

Academic vocabulary for author's techniques

TermDefinition
Allusion reference to history or literature (Biblical references are very common)
Diction Author's word choice
Flashback Going back in time to an earlier event in the story or selection
Foreshadowing clues to future events
imagery pictures created in the mind using the 5 senses
irony opposite of expected happens
mood(atmosphere) reader's emotions or feelings
motif elements repeated in many stories
Point of view Who is telling the story?
First person point of view told by the character using the pronoun "I"
3rd person limited told by an outside narrator; can only see, hear or think what one character or narrator knows
3rd person omniscient told by an outside narrator; can see the thoughts and inot the minds of all the major characters
Suspense wondering what will happen next; tension
Theme lesson learned; moral of the story
