Vocabulary WordDefinition
Cell Theory Every cell comes from a cell that already existed
Cell Wall The tough, rigid outer covering that protects cell & gives them their shape
Cell Membrane The protective layer around every cell
Cytoplasm A gelatinlike substance that cells are filled with; it constantly flows inside the cell membrane
Ribosome The small structures that take part in making protein
Organelle Large structures in cells, they are found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells; have different functions
Nucleus Long, threadlike, hereditary material; its made up of DNA
Chloroplast Green organs in plants cells, they make the food
Mitochondrion Organelles where energy is released when food is broken down into carbon dioxide & water
Endoplasmic Reticulum A series of folded membranes in which materials can be processed & moved around inside the cell
Golgi body Stacked, flattened membranes
Tissue A group of similar cells that work together to do one job
Organ A structure made up of two or more different types of tissues that work together
Organ System A group of organs working together to perform a certain function
