WIMS - 7LA - Myths and Folktales Vocabulary Terms

TermDefinition
myth a fictional tale that explains the actions of gods or heroes or the origins of elements of nature. It is spread from generation to generation by word of mouth
mythology a collection of myths of a particular people
legend a widely told story about the past - one that may or may not have a foundation in fact
folktale a story composed orally and then passed from person to person by word of mouth. Originated among people who could neither read nor write
fable a brief story or poem, usually with animal characters, that teaches a lesson, or moral - usually stated at the end
tall tale types of folk tales that often use hyperbole for comic effect. They focus on a central hero who performs impossible feats
hyperbole the author's use of exaggeration or overstatement for emphasis
epic a long narrative poem about a larger-than-life hero who engages in a dangerous journey that is important to the history of a nation or culture
quest a dangerous journey
oral tradition the passing of songs, stories, and poems from generation to generation by word of mouth
theme a central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work. A generalization, or a general statement, about human beings or about life
stated theme stated directly in the text
implied theme the reader must figure out what the theme is by looking at what the work reveals about people or life
moral a lesson taught by a literary work. Must be drawn by the reader, based on other elements in the work
hero a character whose actions are inspiring, or noble. Struggles to overcome the obstacles and problems that stand in their way
personification a type of figurative language in which a nonhuman subject is given characteristics
allusion a reference to a well-known person, event, place, literary work, or work of art
conflict a struggle between two or more opposing forces
internal conflict takes place within the mind of a character
external conflict a character struggles against some outside force - another person, nature, or fate
inference a logical guess or conclusion based on evidence
motivation a reason that explains or partially explains a character's thoughts, feelings, actions, or speech
