Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Elements Material made of the same basic kind of matter and the ingredients that make substances.
Metals They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Nonmetals Elements that do not conduct heat or electricity very well.
Semimetals Elements that are sometimes like metals and sometimes like nonmetals.
Atoms The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of an element.
Atomic theory the idea that everything is made of small particles.
compound a type of matter made of two or more elements.
molecule the smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of that compound.
Solid A substance that has a definite shape and volume.
Liquid A substance that has a definite volume, but no definite shape.
Gas A substance without a definite shape or volume.
Plasmas Atoms that break down into part with electric charges.
Freezing Point When a liquid turns into a solid.
Melting Point When a solid turns into a liquid.
Evaporation Happens when particles leave a liquid and become gas.
Condensation Occurs when a gas turns into a liquid.
