Tissues & Membranes

A&P chpt4

TermDefinition
dense fibrous connective tissue tissue in tendons & ligaments
smooth muscle found in walls of hollow body organs
blood only connective tissue with liquid matrix
elastic connective tissue closely packed elastic fibers
erythrocytes red blood cells
leukocytes white blood cells
cardiac muscle found only in wall of heart
nervous tissue found in brain, spinal chord & nerves
inflammation nonspecific defense mechanism that attempts to localize or contain tissue energy & to prepare the area for healing
regeneration & fibrosis 2 types of tissue repair
fibrosis replacement of destroyed tissue by the generation of fibrous connective tissue
fibrosis formation of scar tissue
peritoneum serous membrane in the abdominopelvic cavity
tissue group of cells, similar structure & function together as a unit
basement membrane epithelial tissue, opposite the free surface the cells are attached to underlying connective tissue by a non cellular
simple cuboidal epithelium single layer cube shaped, covering of ovary, lining of kidney tubules
goblet cells interspersed amoung simple columnar cells
goblet cells flask shaped, secrete mucus
thrombocytes blood platelets
neurons or nerve cells cells in nerve tissue that generate & connect impulses
serous membrane epithelial membrane that secretes a serous fluid, lines the closed body cavities & covers the organs within those cavities
serous membrane also called serosa
pericardium serous membrane lines the pericardial cavity & covers the heart
epithelial, connective, muscle & nervous 4 types of tissue
simple columnar epithelium single layer of cells that are taller than they are wide, lining stomach & intestines
pleura serous membrane lines thoracic cavity & covers the lungs
adipose tissue fat connective tissue
tendons connects muscles to bone
ligaments connects bones to bones
cartilage connective tissue, solid yet flexible
bone osseous tissue, most rigid of all connective tissue
regeneration replacement of destroyed tissue by the proliferation of cells that are identical to the original cells
simple squamous epithelium single layer, thin flat cells
elastic cartilage flexible cartilage
hyaline cartilage most common type of cartilage, connects ribs to sternum, supports rings of trachea
skeletal muscle typical "muscle"
skeletal muscle 40% of body weight
meninges connective tissue membranes in dorsal cavity that covers or protects the brain & spinal chord
stratified squamous epithelium consists of many layers, forms outer layer of skin & extends a short distance into every body opening that is continuous with the skin
epithelial tissue widespread throughout the body, forms covering of all body surfaces, lines body cavities & hollow organs
epithelial tissue major tissue in glands
muscle tissue composed of cells that have special ability to shorten or contract
fibro cartilage connective tissue has an abundance of strong collagenous fibers embedded in the matrix
synovial membranes secrete synovial fluid into the joint cavity
synovial membranes fluid in it lubricates the cartilage on the ends of the bones so they can move freely & without friction
connective tissue binds structures together
loose connective tissue packing material in the body
serous fluid secreted by the epithelium, lubricates the membrane & reduces friction & abrasion when the organs in the thoracic or abdominopelvic cavity move against each other or the cavity wall
body membranes thin sheets of tissue that cover the body, line body cavities, cover organs within the cavities & line the cavities in hollow organs
mucous membranes epithelial membranes that consist of epithelial tissue attached to underlying loose connective tissue
glandular epithelium consists of cells that are specialized to produce & secrete substances
transitional epithelium specialized type of tissue that has several layers but can be stretched in response to tension

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
