Cells

Science

TermDefinition
Animal Cell A cell that is in animals
Plant Cell A cell in all plants
Bacteria Cell A cell that makes up a bacteria
Mitochondrion spherical to rod-shaped organelles with a double membrane.
Ribosome Pockets of Protein
Vesicle Something holding liquid
Nucleus spherical body containing many organelles, including the nucleolus
Chloroplast Membrane-bound organelles that use light energy and make food.
Golgi Apparatus a flattened, layered, sac-like organelle that looks like a stack of pancakes and is located near the nucleus
Cell Membrane A flexible covering that protects the inside of a cell from the environment outside the shell.
Cell wall A stiff structure the cell membrane that protects a cell from attack by viruses and other harmful organisms.
Cytoskeleton A network of threadlike proteins joined together that gives a cell it's shape and helps it move.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum a vast system of interconnected, membranous, infolded and convoluted tubes that are located in the cell's cytoplasm
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum a vast system of interconnected, membranous, infolded and convoluted sacks that are located in the cell's cytoplasm
Lysosomes (also called cell vesicles) round organelles surrounded by a membrane and containing digestive enzymes. This is where the digestion of cell nutrients takes place.
Centriole A organelle near the nucleus in a animal cell
DNA A substance that carries genetic information in the cells of plants and animals.
Flagellum These are long, tail like things that move back and forth making the cell move.
Prokaryotic Cell In this type of cell there is not a membrane.
Eukaryotic Cell Plants, animals, fungi, protists are made of this.
Organelles This is surrounded by membranes. Every Eukaryotic Cell has other structures and this is one of them. This one has special functions.
Multicellular Having many cells
Nuclear Membrane the membrane that surrounds the nucleus
Nuclear Envelope This contains a lot of pores.
Nucleolus A small structure in the nucleus of a cell
Unicellular Having only one cell
Cell Theory the theory that cells form the fundamental structural and functional units of all living organisms; proposed in 1838 by Matthias Schleiden and by Theodor Schwann

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
