WIMS - 7LA - Nonfiction Vocabulary Terms

nonfiction | prose writing that presents and explains ideas or that tells about real people, places, objects, or events |
fiction | prose writing that tells about imaginary characters and events |
point of view | the perspective or vantage point, from which a story is told |
biography | a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells the life story of another person |
autobiography | the story of the writer's own life, told by the writer |
letters | written communication from one person to another |
journals | a daily, or periodic, account of events and the writer's thoughts and feelings about those events |
essay | a short nonfiction work about a particular subject |
informational texts | written documents we come across in everyday life |
author's purpose | the reason for writing |
audience | who the writer is writing to or for |
expository writing | presents facts, discusses ideas, or explains a process |
persuasive writing | meant to convince the reader to adopt a particular point of view or to take a particular course of action |
narrative writing | tells about real-life experiences |
descriptive writing | uses images that appeal to the five senses |
informal essay | uses casual, conversational language |
historical essay | gives facts, explanations, and insights about historical events |
informational essay | an essay that explains a process |
anecdote | a brief story about an interesting, amusing, or strange event. It is used to entertain or to make a point |
chronological organization | presents details in time order from first to last - or sometimes from last to first |
problem and solution organization | identifies a problem and then proposes a solution |
organization | written in a way that presents information clearly and logically |
